Eri Maldives has expanded its guest experience through a creative collaboration with renowned Maldivian artist Ismail Maaish, transforming the resort’s Beach Shack into a vibrant expression of the Maldives’ marine environment, culture and artistic identity.

Located beside one of the island’s most popular stretches of reef, Beach Shack has been reimagined as a living canvas through an original mural created by Maaish over the weekend. Guests were able to observe the artist’s creative process as the artwork gradually took shape, adding an interactive cultural dimension to the island experience.

Inspired by the underwater world surrounding Eri Maldives, the mural features a playful, sunglasses-wearing octopus surrounded by schools of fish, bringing the colour, movement and character of the house reef above the water. The octopus also reflects the distinctive plush character that welcomes guests to their villas upon arrival, connecting the artwork with the resort’s wider storytelling and sense of place.

“At Beach Shack, I wanted to bring the energy of the house reef above the water and create something playful, distinctly Maldivian and connected to its surroundings,” Maaish said. “The ocean is part of everyday life here, and this mural celebrates the colour, movement and marine characters found just beyond the shore.”

With a professional background in architecture, Maaish works across ink, watercolour, acrylic and large-scale murals. His distinctive artistic approach combines structure with spontaneity, using bold colours and expressive characters to explore Maldivian folklore, island life, cultural heritage and identity.

Eri Maldives General Manager Haroon Mohamed said the Beach Shack Artist Takeover reflects the resort’s concept of “The Island of Becoming,” where nature, creativity and cultural discovery form an integral part of the guest journey.

“Together with Ismail Maaish and the KULA Initiative, we are proud to provide Maldivian talent with a meaningful platform while inviting guests to experience our house reef and island culture from a fresh perspective,” Mohamed said.

The collaboration was presented under Pulse Resorts’ KULA Initiative, which provides local artists with opportunities to showcase their creative work and cultural perspectives to an international audience. Through such collaborations, Maldivian creativity and heritage are incorporated into contemporary resort experiences while strengthening the visibility of local artistic talent within the country’s globally recognised tourism industry.

The project marks the first edition of Eri Maldives’ Beach Shack Takeovers, an evolving creative platform designed to invite artists and other creative talents to reinterpret the beachfront venue through their own distinctive craft.

By combining natural beauty, marine inspiration, local storytelling and contemporary art, Eri Maldives continues to enhance its identity as an experiential island destination while offering international travellers deeper opportunities to engage with Maldivian culture during their stay.
