The Maldives Pension Administration Office has reported total pension disbursements exceeding MVR 173 million for September 2026, highlighting the continued delivery of financial support to older citizens, retired employees and eligible long-serving personnel. The payments span contributory and state-funded schemes, reflecting the role of the national pension framework in supporting retirement security and providing social protection.

The monthly statistical breakdown, published through the Pension Office’s social media channels, details payments administered under the Maldives Pension System alongside specific state-funded retirement programmes. The figures provide a clear account of how pension funding reaches beneficiaries through schemes with distinct objectives, ranging from alleviating old-age poverty to replacing a portion of employment income after retirement.

The state-funded Basic Pension scheme accounted for the largest share of September’s disbursements, with more than MVR 128 million distributed to 27,313 beneficiaries. Financed directly by the state, the programme is designed to alleviate old-age poverty by providing eligible older citizens with regular financial assistance. Its substantial coverage underscores the importance of government-funded support within the Maldives’ social protection framework.

For older people and their families, regular pension income can contribute towards everyday expenses and help maintain greater financial independence. The Basic Pension scheme therefore serves an important social and economic purpose, supporting household stability while providing a foundation of income security in later life.

The Maldives Retirement Pension Scheme disbursed more than MVR 14 million to 2,761 beneficiaries during September. Payments under this contributory scheme are financed through accumulated scheme funds, with the initiative aiming to provide a 50 per cent income replacement rate upon retirement. This objective highlights the importance of building retirement savings during employment to support financial wellbeing beyond working life.

Alongside these principal schemes, the Pension Office reported substantial payments under programmes covering retired state employees and individuals eligible for long-term service benefits. The government allocated more than MVR 27 million to 4,849 beneficiaries through the Retirement Benefits of State Employees programme, continuing financial support for personnel who have completed their public sector careers.

State-funded payments under the Long Term Service Pensions and Allowances category exceeded MVR 4 million, covering 2,209 eligible individuals. These benefits form another component of the national retirement support framework, providing assistance linked to qualifying service and recognising the contribution of long-serving personnel.

Together, the September disbursements demonstrate the breadth of retirement support administered across the Maldives. The combination of state-funded assistance and contributory pension payments helps address different retirement needs, while the government’s financing of key programmes sustains an important source of support for eligible citizens.

The Pension Office releases these statistics every month to promote transparency concerning beneficiary coverage and the administration of national social protection funds. Regular publication enables the public to follow the distribution of pension payments and better understand the role each scheme plays in supporting retirement security, reinforcing accountability in the management of these essential programmes.
