Maldivian government officials have held discussions with representatives of the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) and UNDP Maldives to explore opportunities for strengthening cooperation in digital economic development, micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), entrepreneurship and private sector growth.
The meeting focused on key national development priorities and potential areas where international development partnerships could support the Maldives in building a more dynamic, technology-driven and inclusive economy. Discussions highlighted the importance of expanding opportunities for entrepreneurs, strengthening the MSME sector and creating an enabling environment for businesses to grow, innovate and contribute more strongly to national economic development.
Particular attention was given to opportunities for supporting youth and women-led enterprises, with the discussions recognising the important role emerging entrepreneurs can play in diversifying economic activity and creating new employment and income-generating opportunities across the country. Strengthening access to technical support, knowledge, digital solutions and development opportunities for smaller businesses was also among the areas considered during the engagement.
The discussions on digital economic development reflect the Government’s broader focus on modernising the Maldivian economy and creating greater opportunities through technology and digital services. Expanding digital capabilities can provide businesses with improved access to markets, services and customers while enabling entrepreneurs to develop innovative products and business models suited to both domestic and international markets.
MSMEs remain an important component of the Maldivian economy, particularly in supporting local employment, entrepreneurship and economic activity across the islands. Greater cooperation with development partners such as IsDB and UNDP has the potential to further strengthen the ecosystem available to smaller businesses through capacity development, institutional support, improved access to opportunities and initiatives designed to encourage sustainable private sector expansion.
The meeting also explored avenues for deeper collaboration aimed at strengthening the overall business environment and encouraging greater participation by young entrepreneurs and women in economic activity. Such cooperation could help expand opportunities beyond established sectors while supporting the development of new enterprises capable of contributing to economic diversification and long-term resilience.
The Government continues to engage with international development institutions and partners to identify programmes and financing opportunities that complement national development objectives. Cooperation with IsDB and UNDP is expected to support efforts to build stronger institutions, promote entrepreneurship and enable the private sector to play an increasingly important role in the country’s economic transformation.
