President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has pledged practical assistance to improve opportunities and administrative support for Maldivian students studying in Malaysia, following the Malaysian leader’s recent State Visit to the Maldives.
Speaking on PSM’s “Nation Chat” programme, President Muizzu said discussions with Prime Minister Anwar placed significant emphasis on the welfare of the large Maldivian community residing and studying in Malaysia. Approximately 2,700 Maldivian students are currently enrolled in Malaysian educational institutions, while an estimated 6,000 Maldivians, including students and their family members, are residing in the country.
President Muizzu said Prime Minister Anwar had given assurances that necessary processes would be facilitated for Maldivians who are already studying in Malaysia as well as those planning to pursue higher education there. The discussions included measures to address administrative difficulties faced by students and improve access to opportunities that can support their academic and professional development.
Particular attention was given to internship opportunities for Maldivian students pursuing professional qualifications, including those studying medicine and technical disciplines. President Muizzu said the Malaysian Prime Minister had expressed readiness to work towards facilitating such opportunities, which could provide Maldivian students with greater access to practical training and professional experience required as part of their studies and future careers.
The commitment is expected to further strengthen Malaysia’s position as an important higher education destination for Maldivians. Malaysian universities and higher education institutions have long attracted Maldivian students across a broad range of disciplines, supported by geographical proximity, established educational links and strong people-to-people relations between the two countries.
President Muizzu highlighted that the discussions demonstrated the Government’s continuing efforts to address the concerns of Maldivians living overseas through direct engagement with partner governments. Improving educational opportunities, simplifying administrative procedures and expanding professional training pathways for students abroad form an important part of efforts to strengthen human capital development and create better prospects for young Maldivians.
The State Visit also produced important developments in economic cooperation between the Maldives and Malaysia. The two governments discussed progressing a USD 100 million financial facility, with the relevant monetary authorities working on the arrangements required for its implementation. The facility represents another avenue of financial cooperation between the two countries and reflects the strengthening economic relationship accompanying their longstanding diplomatic ties.
President Muizzu and Prime Minister Anwar also agreed to begin negotiations towards a Preferential Trade Agreement between the Maldives and Malaysia. The proposed agreement is expected to provide special trade concessions and create additional opportunities for businesses, investors and entrepreneurs in both countries while supporting increased bilateral commerce.
Discussions further covered opportunities for joint investment and broader economic collaboration, with both governments seeking to develop stronger private-sector partnerships and identify sectors capable of generating long-term mutual benefits. Cooperation in areas including tourism, healthcare, renewable energy, digital infrastructure and trade has also been identified as part of the expanding bilateral agenda.
President Muizzu described Malaysia as a country holding special importance to the Maldives and said the two governments are seeking to elevate the relationship to a higher level. The discussions also addressed cooperation on climate change, an area of major importance to the Maldives as a climate-vulnerable island nation, alongside opportunities for both countries to work together on shared international priorities.
Operational matters affecting the Maldivian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur were also discussed, reflecting the Government’s focus on strengthening diplomatic and consular services for the Maldivian community in Malaysia. Enhancing the effectiveness of overseas missions is expected to support faster assistance for students, families, businesses and other Maldivians requiring government services while abroad.
The two sides also discussed establishing a joint mechanism to oversee and advance cooperation between the Maldives and Malaysia. Such coordination is expected to provide a structured platform for following up on agreements, addressing outstanding matters and identifying new areas of partnership as bilateral engagement expands.
Prime Minister Anwar’s State Visit, undertaken at the invitation of President Muizzu, also included official talks covering trade and investment, healthcare, tourism, defence and Islamic affairs. Agreements were exchanged in areas of bilateral cooperation, while both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening relations between the two countries.
The latest commitments concerning Maldivian students add a strong people-focused dimension to the expanding partnership. With thousands of Maldivians studying and residing in Malaysia, closer government-to-government coordination is expected to make education, professional training and everyday administrative processes easier for the community while creating additional opportunities for future generations of students.
The outcomes of the visit reflect the Government’s broader foreign policy approach of translating close diplomatic relations into practical benefits for Maldivian citizens while expanding economic, educational and development partnerships with friendly countries. The growing Maldives-Malaysia relationship is expected to support greater mobility, stronger commercial engagement and wider opportunities for citizens and businesses of both nations in the years ahead.
