President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has outlined a forward-looking vision for the Maldives tourism industry, calling for greater investment in digital skills, artificial intelligence and service innovation while ensuring that the personal hospitality for which the destination is globally recognised remains at the centre of the visitor experience.

In his message marking World Tourism Day 2026, President Muizzu highlighted the growing influence of digital technologies and artificial intelligence on the international travel industry, noting that technology is rapidly transforming the way travellers discover destinations, plan their holidays and experience tourism services.

The President said these developments provide significant opportunities for the Maldives to engage more effectively with travellers, strengthen tourism services and maintain its competitiveness as one of the world’s leading holiday destinations. At the same time, he stressed that the country must continue strengthening the skills and capabilities of people working across the tourism industry so that the sector can fully benefit from the opportunities created by digital transformation.

As global travel becomes increasingly technology-driven, digital platforms and artificial intelligence are becoming an important part of the entire visitor journey, beginning from destination research and holiday planning to reservations, personalised services and communication throughout a traveller’s stay. For the Maldives, which has built an internationally recognised tourism industry around premium island experiences and personalised hospitality, the growing use of technology presents opportunities to further improve convenience and service quality without diminishing the personal relationships that distinguish the destination.

Maldivian resorts are particularly well positioned to benefit from this transformation. Digital solutions can support resorts in communicating with guests before arrival, providing more personalised information, understanding visitor preferences and making services easier to access throughout a holiday. Artificial intelligence can also assist tourism businesses with multilingual communication, service planning, operational efficiency, destination marketing and the delivery of information tailored to different international markets.

Technology can additionally strengthen the international visibility of Maldivian resorts at a time when travellers increasingly rely on digital platforms and intelligent travel-planning tools when selecting destinations and accommodation. Maintaining accurate digital information, strengthening online engagement and developing the capabilities required to work with emerging technologies could therefore become increasingly important for resorts seeking to reach travellers from both established and emerging tourism markets.

President Muizzu, however, emphasised that technology should complement rather than replace the human touch that remains at the heart of Maldivian hospitality. The warmth, authenticity and personalised attention offered by people working throughout the tourism industry continue to be among the Maldives’ strongest advantages, making human interaction an essential element of the country’s tourism identity even as the industry becomes more digitally advanced.

This approach provides the Maldives with an opportunity to combine technological progress with the distinctive resort experience that has established the archipelago as one of the most recognisable tourism destinations in the world. Digital innovation can make travel more convenient and services more responsive, while Maldivian hospitality, the country’s natural environment and its unique island character continue to provide the experiences that attract visitors from across the globe.

The President also highlighted the importance of continued innovation, collaboration and investment in people, identifying these areas as essential to ensuring that the Maldives remains competitive as the international tourism industry evolves. Developing a workforce equipped with stronger digital capabilities could enable resorts and other tourism businesses to adopt new technologies more effectively while creating additional professional opportunities for Maldivians.

President Muizzu expressed his appreciation to those working throughout the tourism sector for their contribution to the development and success of the industry. He noted that tourism has played a vital role in national development, created opportunities across the islands and strengthened connections between Maldivian communities and the millions of international visitors welcomed to the country over the years.

The Government’s emphasis on skills development and digital innovation also reflects the importance of preparing the tourism industry for changing traveller expectations. As international visitors increasingly expect convenient digital services alongside high-quality personal experiences, strengthening both technological capabilities and professional service standards will be important for maintaining the Maldives’ strong position in the global tourism market.

For resorts, the transition offers opportunities extending beyond marketing and reservations. Smarter digital systems can support more efficient resource planning, improve coordination between operational teams, provide quicker access to guest information and help tourism businesses better understand changing travel patterns. When combined with well-trained employees and high standards of hospitality, these capabilities can contribute to an increasingly seamless visitor experience.

The President’s message also placed the country’s natural beauty and distinctive identity at the centre of its future tourism development. As the Maldives advances digitalisation, the focus remains on ensuring that technological development supports a resilient and sustainable tourism industry while safeguarding the qualities that have made the destination internationally renowned.

World Tourism Day 2026 was observed under the theme “Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism”, reflecting the growing role of emerging technologies in shaping the future of global travel. The theme highlights how digital transformation can improve tourism services, strengthen businesses, develop new opportunities and reshape interactions between destinations and travellers.

In a separate message shared on his official X account, President Muizzu reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to harnessing digital opportunities to develop a resilient, sustainable and future-ready tourism sector.

With the Government placing increasing emphasis on digital capabilities, workforce development and innovation, the Maldives is positioning its tourism industry to respond to the next generation of global travellers while preserving the hospitality, natural beauty and distinctive island experiences that remain at the heart of the country’s international tourism appeal.
