The Maldives continues to strengthen its position as one of the world’s most distinctive luxury tourism destinations, with Luxury Escapes Country Manager for the Maldives Michael Thompson highlighting the country’s exceptional resort diversity, natural beauty, marine experiences and growing accessibility for Australian travellers.
Thompson, who has worked closely with the Maldives market for the past four years, said his regular visits have allowed him to experience the destination far beyond its internationally recognised imagery. His journeys across different atolls have included seaplane transfers over turquoise lagoons, diving, surfing, snorkelling and exploring the wide variety of dining and resort experiences available throughout the archipelago.
Before taking responsibility for Luxury Escapes campaigns in the Maldives, Thompson managed the Australian and Hawaiian markets. Despite working across several internationally renowned destinations, he described the Maldives as a standout destination and said travelling to the country continues to feel special even after numerous visits.
For Thompson, one of the Maldives’ greatest strengths is the diversity found across its resorts and atolls. Each island offers its own setting, character and collection of experiences, meaning repeat visitors can discover a considerably different holiday each time they return. Travellers can choose between intimate private-island retreats, expansive family-focused resorts, properties known for diving and surfing, secluded luxury escapes and destinations distinguished by sophisticated culinary offerings.
The Maldives’ internationally recognised resort model remains central to its appeal. Individual resort islands provide travellers with a high degree of privacy while combining accommodation, restaurants, recreational facilities, marine activities and personalised hospitality within a single island environment. Overwater villas remain among the destination’s most sought-after accommodation experiences, allowing guests to step directly from their villas into the Indian Ocean and explore the surrounding marine environment.
Thompson said Australian visitors are particularly attracted by the Maldives’ blue lagoons, white-sand beaches, rich marine life and overwater accommodation. Snorkelling directly from a villa or resort island can provide opportunities to encounter colourful reef fish, rays and turtles, creating experiences that distinguish the Maldives from many other beach destinations around the world.
While the Maldives has traditionally been strongly associated with honeymoons, proposals, anniversaries and milestone celebrations, Thompson said the destination now appeals to a much wider range of travellers. Resorts increasingly cater to families, groups of friends, adventure travellers, diving enthusiasts, surfers and visitors seeking a quiet private retreat.
The breadth of activities available across the country has also contributed to this wider appeal. Depending on the resort and atoll, travellers may have opportunities to dive with manta rays, swim with whale sharks, surf internationally recognised waves, take scenic cruises, snorkel directly from the island and visit some of the Maldives’ more remote areas.
Resort dining has similarly developed into an important component of the Maldives holiday experience. Thompson described the standard and variety of dining available across Maldivian resorts as world-class, with some resort restaurants and culinary concepts becoming attractions in their own right. The combination of international cuisine, local influences, oceanfront settings and personalised service has helped resorts broaden the overall experience beyond accommodation and marine activities.
Another feature Thompson highlighted is the journey from Velana International Airport to the resort itself. Depending on the location of the property, guests may continue their journey by speedboat, domestic flight or seaplane, extending the sense of discovery from the moment they arrive in the Maldives.
He particularly highlighted seaplane transfers as one of the country’s most memorable tourism experiences. Flying above small islands, coral reefs and brilliant turquoise lagoons provides visitors with a distinctive aerial perspective of the Maldives’ geography and natural environment before they even reach their resort.
Accessibility from Australia has also improved, supporting the Maldives’ efforts to diversify its tourism source markets and attract more long-haul visitors. Thompson said Luxury Escapes has witnessed a growing number of Australians discovering the Maldives during the past four years.
The introduction of Luxury Escapes’ weekly direct Melbourne–Malé service has further improved connectivity between Australia and the Maldives. The overnight journey takes approximately 11 hours, allowing Australian travellers to depart Melbourne and arrive directly in Malé without the additional international connections traditionally required for many journeys to the destination.
Thompson said the direct service has made the Maldives easier to reach for Australian travellers, creating further opportunities for resorts to attract visitors seeking premium leisure, family, adventure and celebration holidays.
The expanding connectivity complements the Maldives’ broader tourism development and international market diversification efforts. The government has continued to place strong emphasis on improving connectivity, strengthening tourism infrastructure and enhancing the country’s global competitiveness as it seeks to attract visitors from both established and emerging markets.
Luxury Escapes also sees value as an important factor in encouraging Australians to consider a Maldives holiday. Thompson said the company negotiates its Maldives campaigns on behalf of millions of Luxury Escapes members, allowing it to develop packages at a wide range of leading resorts.
According to Thompson, the overall package is particularly important in the Maldives because the cost of transfers and resort services can significantly influence the final cost of a holiday. Luxury Escapes therefore includes return transfers from Malé in every Maldives campaign.
Depending on the location of the selected resort, these transfers may involve a speedboat, domestic flight or seaplane. Thompson noted that arranging such transfers separately can add thousands of dollars to the overall holiday cost, making their inclusion an important component of the company’s packages.
Many Luxury Escapes packages also include dining plans, excursions and family-oriented benefits. Selected resort offers allow children to stay and dine without additional charges, helping make the Maldives increasingly attractive to the family travel market.
Thompson said having key elements of the holiday arranged in advance allows travellers to enjoy their resort experience with greater certainty over their overall expenditure. Luxury Escapes’ portfolio covers a broad range of Maldivian properties, enabling travellers to select accommodation according to their interests and preferred style of holiday.
The available options range from romantic overwater villa stays and secluded private retreats to family holidays, diving and surfing experiences and culinary-focused getaways. The diversity of the resort sector is increasingly allowing the Maldives to appeal to different traveller segments rather than being regarded exclusively as a honeymoon destination.
Thompson also highlighted the role of Maldivian hospitality in shaping visitors’ impressions of the country. He said the warmth and generosity of Maldivian people, together with their connection to the ocean, island communities and local traditions, gives visitors a genuine sense of place throughout their stay.
For Thompson personally, the Maldives experience begins immediately after arriving in the country, with its tropical climate and distinctive island environment creating an immediate sense of arrival at a destination unlike most others.
An enthusiast of snorkelling, swimming and surfing, he said the quality of the Maldives’ natural environment and the variety found among its resorts continue to impress him. Travellers can choose to fill their days with marine activities and excursions or spend their time enjoying the surroundings, dining experiences and tranquillity of their chosen island.
After four years of working closely with the destination, Thompson said the Maldives continues to feel special on every visit. Its combination of natural beauty, internationally competitive resorts, marine biodiversity, diverse experiences, Maldivian hospitality and improving global connectivity is helping the country maintain its strong position within the international luxury travel market.
With Australian demand expanding and easier direct access supporting future growth, the Maldives is well positioned to welcome a broader range of visitors while continuing to build on the strengths that have established the island nation as one of the world’s most recognisable tourism destinations.
