The Maldives and Kenya have strengthened their longstanding diplomatic relationship with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) establishing a formal framework for regular political consultations between the two countries.
The agreement was signed in New York on the sidelines of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly, following a meeting between the foreign ministers of the Maldives and Kenya. Minister of Foreign Affairs Iruthisham Adam signed the MoU on behalf of the Government of Maldives, while Kenya’s Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, Dr. Musalia Mudavadi, signed on behalf of the Government of Kenya.
Under the MoU, the two governments will have an established platform for regular consultations, enabling them to deepen political dialogue, exchange perspectives on matters of mutual interest and explore new areas where bilateral cooperation can be expanded. The framework is also expected to support closer coordination between the two countries as they continue to engage on regional and international issues of shared importance.
The agreement represents another step in the Maldives Government’s efforts to broaden the country’s diplomatic engagement and strengthen partnerships with countries across different regions. Closer engagement with Kenya also provides opportunities for the two nations to identify mutually beneficial areas of cooperation and build stronger institutional links through continued government-to-government dialogue.
The Maldives and Kenya established diplomatic relations on 23 October 1995 and have maintained warm and friendly relations for more than three decades. The latest agreement reflects the commitment of both governments to further develop this relationship and pursue closer cooperation that delivers long-term benefits for the peoples of the Maldives and Kenya.
