A delegation from Türkiye’s Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi (AK Party), led by Deputy Chairman Hüseyin Yayman, paid a courtesy call on President Dr Mohamed Muizzu at the President’s Official Residence, Mulee’aage, on Wednesday, with discussions focusing on strengthening relations between the Maldives and Türkiye and expanding cooperation across key economic and cultural sectors.
During the meeting, President Muizzu and the visiting delegation discussed the longstanding and brotherly relationship between the Maldives and Türkiye, as well as opportunities to further strengthen engagement between the two countries. Tourism, trade cooperation and cultural exchange featured prominently in the discussions, reflecting the growing scope of bilateral relations and the potential for closer collaboration in areas that can contribute to economic development and greater people-to-people engagement.
Tourism remains an important area for cooperation between the two countries, particularly as the Maldives continues to strengthen its position as one of the world’s leading island destinations while seeking to diversify its tourism markets and deepen engagement with international partners. Closer cooperation with Türkiye could provide opportunities for greater tourism connectivity, destination promotion, investment and exchanges between businesses operating across the tourism and hospitality sectors.
The discussions on trade also come at a significant period in Maldives–Türkiye economic relations. The Preferential Trade Agreement between the two countries officially entered into force on 1 August 2026 after both governments completed the necessary domestic legal procedures. The agreement, originally signed on 4 November 2024, establishes an enhanced framework for bilateral trade and creates additional opportunities for businesses in both countries to access each other’s markets.
The expansion of commercial ties with Türkiye is consistent with the Maldives Government’s broader efforts to strengthen international economic partnerships, improve market access for Maldivian businesses and products, and attract greater investment into the country. The Government has continued to engage international partners and business communities across a range of sectors as part of its focus on diversifying economic opportunities and strengthening the Maldives’ connections with global markets.
Türkiye and the Maldives also have considerable potential to broaden private-sector engagement beyond traditional trade. Tourism, investment, infrastructure, technology, renewable energy, agriculture, real estate and other commercial sectors have previously featured in economic discussions between representatives of the two countries. Stronger engagement between businesses and institutions could therefore complement government-to-government cooperation and support new commercial partnerships.
Cultural exchange was another important component of Wednesday’s discussions. Greater cultural and people-to-people interaction can contribute to deeper mutual understanding while strengthening the wider relationship between the two countries. Educational cooperation, institutional exchanges, tourism and increased interaction between communities can further reinforce the established friendship between Türkiye and the Maldives.
The courtesy call also reflects the continued high-level engagement between the Maldives and Türkiye as both countries seek to broaden their relationship across diplomatic, economic and social areas. Such engagements provide opportunities to identify new areas of cooperation while advancing existing initiatives in trade, tourism and other sectors of mutual interest.
President Muizzu’s administration has placed increased emphasis on expanding the Maldives’ international economic partnerships and creating new opportunities for trade and investment. The growing economic framework with Türkiye, including the implementation of the Preferential Trade Agreement, provides a platform for businesses from both countries to explore new commercial opportunities and strengthen bilateral economic activity.
The meeting concluded with both sides reaffirming their shared commitment to further deepening the longstanding and close relations between the Maldives and Türkiye. The discussions highlighted the importance attached by both sides to maintaining strong bilateral engagement while expanding cooperation in tourism, trade, cultural exchange and other areas that can deliver mutual benefits for the two countries and their peoples.
