Bank of Maldives (BML) has conducted its annual Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) programme for girls in Sh. Funadhoo and Sh. Milandhoo, continuing its efforts to encourage greater participation of young women in technology-related education and careers across the Maldives.

As part of the programme, a team of 10 female staff members from BML’s Technology Division is conducting dedicated sessions at Sh. Funadhoo School and Sh. Milandhoo School. The sessions target female students in Grades 7 to 10 and are designed to introduce them to the expanding field of information and communication technology while providing practical insight into the wide range of professional opportunities available within the technology sector.

Through direct engagement with experienced female technology professionals, participating students are being given an opportunity to better understand how digital technologies are shaping modern workplaces and creating new career pathways. The programme also provides students with exposure to professionals working in the industry, helping them gain greater awareness of the skills, educational pathways and career opportunities associated with ICT.

The initiative forms part of BML’s annual programme held in connection with International Girls in ICT Day, which promotes greater involvement of girls and young women in technology education and employment. By taking the programme directly to schools in Funadhoo and Milandhoo, BML is extending access to technology awareness initiatives beyond the capital and helping students in island communities explore opportunities in an increasingly digital economy.

The programme also reflects the growing importance placed on digital skills and human capital development in the Maldives as the country continues to strengthen digitalisation across public services, financial services, education and the wider economy. The Government’s continued focus on expanding digital infrastructure, improving access to technology and developing a skilled workforce is creating an increasingly supportive environment for young Maldivians to pursue careers in emerging and technology-driven industries.

As the country’s leading financial institution, BML has continued to play an important role in supporting financial and technological development nationwide. Initiatives such as the Girls in ICT programme complement broader national efforts to prepare younger generations for future employment opportunities while encouraging greater female participation in areas that are becoming increasingly important to economic growth and innovation.

By engaging students at an early stage of their education, the programme seeks to build confidence, broaden career aspirations and encourage more girls to consider ICT as a potential academic and professional pathway. The initiative further demonstrates the importance of collaboration between the private sector, educational institutions and national development efforts in building a digitally capable and inclusive workforce for the future of the Maldives.
