InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort has welcomed its first green sea turtle hatchlings of the season, reinforcing the resort’s continued contribution to marine conservation and responsible tourism in the Maldives.
Located in the pristine Raa Atoll, InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort is surrounded by a rich marine ecosystem and is recognised as an important nesting site for sea turtles. Six turtle nests have been recorded on the island so far this year, highlighting the ecological importance of Maamunagau and the surrounding waters. Although sea turtles nest throughout the year across the Maldives, June and July generally represent the peak nesting period in Raa Atoll.
The nests recorded during the current season have primarily belonged to green sea turtles, a protected species in the Maldives. The first hatchlings emerged naturally on the evening of 22 July, approximately two months after the eggs were laid, beginning their instinctive journey from the island’s sandy shoreline towards the Indian Ocean.
Throughout the nesting season, the resort’s Marine Biology team carefully monitors recorded nests and conducts research activities in accordance with approved conservation protocols. The monitoring process enables marine specialists to collect valuable information on nesting behaviour, incubation periods, hatchling activity and other indicators that contribute to a better understanding of local sea turtle populations and their habitats.
