President Dr Mohamed Muizzu received diplomatic representatives from Namibia, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Qatar, Fiji, Kosovo, Somalia and Slovenia as they formally presented their Letters of Credence during separate ceremonies held at the President’s Office.
The diplomatic engagements reflected the Government of Maldives’ continued commitment to expanding international cooperation, strengthening bilateral partnerships and advancing shared priorities with countries across Africa, the Caribbean, the Middle East, Europe and the Pacific. The discussions covered tourism, trade, investment, fisheries, healthcare, education, climate action, environmental protection, infrastructure development, youth advancement and regional security.
During his meeting with the High Commissioner of Namibia, Alex L. Tukuhupwele, President Muizzu discussed opportunities to enhance cooperation in tourism, fisheries, trade and investment. The discussions also addressed healthcare development and the exchange of professional knowledge and technical expertise. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral relations and identifying practical areas of cooperation that could deliver sustainable benefits to their respective countries.
President Muizzu also met the Non-Resident Ambassador of the Dominican Republic, Francisco Manuel Comprés Hernández, with discussions focusing on environmental protection and the sustainable development of the blue economy. As Small Island Developing States, the Maldives and the Dominican Republic share common interests in preserving marine ecosystems, strengthening climate resilience and promoting the responsible use of ocean resources. Both sides expressed their commitment to expanding cooperation based on these shared national priorities.
In his meeting with the Non-Resident Ambassador of Cuba, Patricia Lázara Pego Guerra, President Muizzu explored opportunities to strengthen cooperation in healthcare, higher education, professional training and sports development, particularly volleyball. The discussions highlighted Cuba’s recognised experience in healthcare and education and the potential to expand capacity-building opportunities for Maldivian professionals and students. The ambassador also conveyed appreciation for the Maldives’ continued support for Cuba at the United Nations.
Economic cooperation, tourism, infrastructure development, financial assistance and investment were central to President Muizzu’s meeting with the Ambassador of Qatar, Hamad Mohammed Abdullah Al-Sanad Al-Dosari. President Muizzu referred to his recent visit to Qatar and highlighted the close and longstanding relationship between the two countries. The discussions reflected the shared interest of both governments in further expanding commercial engagement and identifying investment opportunities that support the Maldives’ national development priorities.
The President’s meeting with the High Commissioner of Fiji, Jagannath Sami, focused on tourism cooperation, climate action and sustainable development. As island nations facing similar environmental and economic challenges, the Maldives and Fiji recognised the importance of exchanging expertise and coordinating their efforts on climate resilience and sustainable growth. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to working together for mutual benefit and strengthening cooperation within regional and international forums.
President Muizzu and the Non-Resident Ambassador of Kosovo, Lulzim Pllana, discussed expanding bilateral cooperation in education, youth development, tourism and trade. The President expressed appreciation for the scholarships provided by the Government of Kosovo, recognising their contribution to developing the knowledge and skills of Maldivian students. Both sides emphasised the importance of translating diplomatic relations into practical, measurable and sustainable outcomes that benefit the people of both countries.
During his meeting with the Non-Resident Ambassador of Somalia, Dr Abdullahi Mohammed Odowa, President Muizzu discussed opportunities to broaden bilateral cooperation. The two sides also exchanged views on peace, stability and security in the Indian Ocean, recognising the importance of regional collaboration in safeguarding maritime routes and promoting long-term prosperity. They reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening relations between the Maldives and Somalia.
Tourism, climate change, environmental protection and sustainable development were discussed during President Muizzu’s meeting with the Ambassador of Slovenia, Tomaž Mencin. Both sides highlighted the potential to expand cooperation in areas of shared interest and reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening bilateral relations through constructive diplomatic engagement.
The presentation of credentials by the eight diplomatic representatives demonstrates the Maldives’ growing engagement with the international community and the Government’s emphasis on building productive partnerships that support economic development, environmental sustainability, human capital development and regional stability.
The envoys were escorted to the President’s Office in traditional Haiykolhu cultural processions accompanied by the Maldives National Defence Force Drum and Trumpet Band, reflecting the country’s distinctive diplomatic traditions and cultural heritage.
