Maldives Immigration is preparing to enhance biometric screening operations at Velana International Airport with the introduction of a Japanese-funded facial recognition system valued at approximately USD 1.2 million, a development expected to further strengthen border management and improve the travel experience at the country’s main international gateway.
The Government of Japan has donated 48 facial recognition systems for installation at immigration counters at Velana International Airport under the Economic and Social Development Programme. The equipment was provided following an exchange of notes signed on 21 May 2020 and is intended to support the Maldives in reinforcing border control capabilities while improving screening efficiency, public safety and overall operational readiness. The new system is also expected to assist both Maldives Immigration and Maldives Customs Service in responding more effectively to the growing demands of international passenger movement.
The official handover ceremony was attended by Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives Her Excellency Ishigami Rumiko, who presented the equipment, and Controller General of Immigration, Commissioner of Police (Retd) Ahmed Faseeh, who received it on behalf of Maldives Immigration. Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan also took part in the ceremony alongside senior officials and stakeholders, reflecting the importance of the initiative to the country’s wider security and transport infrastructure.
The facial recognition system has been supplied by NEC Corporation of Japan, a global provider of biometric authentication technologies used in airports, border checkpoints and other critical infrastructure facilities in more than 50 countries and regions. NEC’s facial recognition technology has earned international recognition for its performance and reliability, including strong rankings in assessments conducted by the United States National Institute of Standards and Technology. The deployment of such technology in the Maldives is expected to contribute to faster identity verification and more dependable screening processes at one of the busiest and most strategically important points of entry into the country.
Ambassador Ishigami stated that the cooperation reflects Japan’s continued commitment to supporting safer and more efficient international travel through advanced Japanese technology, while also representing another meaningful step in the longstanding partnership between Japan and the Maldives. Her remarks highlighted the broader value of bilateral cooperation in practical sectors that directly support national development, connectivity and public service delivery.
The donation comes at a time when the Maldives continues to modernise its border management systems in response to rising passenger traffic through Velana International Airport, which serves as the primary gateway for visitors, business travellers and international partners arriving in the island nation. As international travel volumes continue to expand, the introduction of advanced biometric systems is expected to play an important role in helping authorities maintain high standards of security while facilitating smoother and more efficient passenger processing.
