The Maldives Monetary Authority has announced the opening of applications for fully funded scholarships in Malaysia for the 2026 academic year, offering Maldivian students and professionals an important opportunity to pursue higher education in key fields that support national development. The scholarship programme covers undergraduate, master’s and doctoral studies in Islamic finance, law, accounting and economics, reflecting a strong commitment to building national capacity in specialised areas that are increasingly important to the Maldives’ financial, legal and economic landscape.
Under the programme, applicants may pursue a Bachelor of Accounting at University Islam Selangor, while master’s level opportunities are available at the International Islamic University Malaysia in law and economics. Doctoral candidates may apply for PhD programmes in Islamic finance and applied muamalat at INCEIF University. The range of study options offered through the scholarship is expected to support the development of a new generation of qualified Maldivian professionals equipped with international academic exposure and expertise in disciplines that are highly relevant to both public institutions and the wider economy.
According to the Maldives Monetary Authority, selected candidates will receive a comprehensive funding package designed to support their studies and welfare throughout their time in Malaysia. The scholarship covers tuition fees, living expenses, a book allowance and return air travel between the Maldives and Malaysia. In addition, the package includes visa expenses and health insurance, ensuring that recipients are able to focus on their academic progress with the necessary financial and practical support in place.
The authority stated that recipients of the scholarship will be required to serve the Maldives for five years after completing their studies. This condition is intended to ensure that the knowledge, training and international academic experience gained through the programme are returned to the country through professional service, helping to strengthen institutions and contribute to long-term national advancement.
Eligibility requirements vary according to the level of study. Applicants for the bachelor’s programme must hold a relevant diploma accredited by the Maldives Qualifications Authority or have the required O-Level passes, in addition to an IELTS score above 5.0. Those applying for master’s programmes must possess a relevant bachelor’s degree and an IELTS score above 6.0, or a TOEFL score above 550. The Maldives Monetary Authority said the selection process will be based on academic merit, the relevance of the applicant’s educational background, professional experience and performance during the interview and assessment process.
The authority has also advised applicants to obtain pre-approval from the Maldives Qualifications Authority before commencing their studies. This requirement is expected to help ensure that the programmes pursued are appropriately recognised and aligned with national higher education standards.
Applications for the scholarship programme will close at 2:00 p.m. on 30 June 2026. Application forms are available through the Maldives Monetary Authority, while further details may be obtained from the MMA Institute for Research and Training. The scholarship opportunity is likely to draw strong interest from candidates seeking to advance their academic and professional futures while contributing meaningfully to the development of the Maldives.
