The Maldives and the United Kingdom have held discussions on further strengthening defence relations, reflecting the continued engagement between the two countries in areas of mutual interest and cooperation. The discussions took place during a meeting between Minister of Defence and National Service Hassan Rasheed and British Ambassador Nicholas David Low, where both sides exchanged views on advancing bilateral ties and enhancing collaboration in the defence sector.

During the meeting, Minister Hassan Rasheed expressed appreciation for the support extended by the United Kingdom in helping to strengthen the Maldives’ defence capabilities. The engagement highlighted the importance both countries place on maintaining close and constructive relations, particularly in areas that contribute to national security, institutional development, and long-term capacity building. The discussions also underscored the shared commitment of the Maldives and the UK to deepen cooperation through practical initiatives that support the professional development of defence institutions.

The Government of Maldives has placed significant priority on increasing the capacity of the Maldives National Defence Force as part of its broader efforts to enhance national preparedness and strengthen the country’s ability to respond effectively to evolving security needs. In this regard, the MNDF continues to engage in a range of training programmes and professional exchanges with partner countries, including the United Kingdom. These programmes play an important role in advancing operational capability, improving technical expertise, and supporting the continued development of the force in line with national objectives.

The discussions between the Maldivian defence minister and the British ambassador reflect the positive trajectory of Maldives–UK relations and the value of sustained international partnerships in supporting the growth of national institutions. As the Maldives continues its efforts to build a stronger and more capable defence sector, cooperation with longstanding partners such as the United Kingdom remains an important element in promoting stability, professional excellence, and institutional resilience.
