Sun Siyam Olhuveli marked International Labour Day on 01 May with a meaningful leadership initiative that placed appreciation, understanding, and teamwork at the centre of the celebration. In recognition of the people whose daily dedication shapes the guest experience, the resort’s leadership team carried out a purposeful Gemba Walk across the island, stepping directly into operational roles to gain a closer understanding of the work, commitment, and professionalism that define the resort’s service culture.
The initiative reflected a thoughtful and people-focused approach to leadership. Rather than observing operations from afar, members of the senior leadership team joined colleagues in their day-to-day responsibilities across key departments of the resort. Director of Human Resources Ahmed Shazeen worked as a barman, engaging with guests and experiencing the pace, attentiveness, and interpersonal skill required in frontline service. Operations Manager Ibrahim Baasith joined the pastry kitchen, taking on the role of pastry chef and gaining first-hand insight into the creativity, discipline, and precision behind the resort’s culinary offerings. General Manager Hassan Adil and Director of Operations Mohamed Ali also entered the kitchen in the role of Chef de Partie, working alongside the brigade and experiencing the coordination, intensity, and teamwork that support the high standards of dining at the resort. Across the island, other leaders took part in housekeeping rounds, security inspections, watersports guidance, kitchen preparations, and engineering tasks, embracing the rhythm of resort life from multiple operational perspectives.
The experience created valuable opportunities for open dialogue between leadership and team members. Through direct engagement in the workplace, leaders were able to ask simple yet important questions about the challenges employees face, the improvements that could ease their work, and the realities of responding when operations do not go according to plan. These conversations provided meaningful insights into everyday responsibilities across the resort while also reinforcing a culture of openness, respect, and mutual understanding. By standing alongside employees in real working environments, the initiative strengthened trust and highlighted the importance of listening as a key part of effective leadership.
Commenting on the initiative, General Manager Hassan Adil said the experience was centred on appreciation and learning rather than evaluation. He noted that it was an opportunity to listen, to learn, and to show respect to the people who bring the resort to life each day. He also reflected that International Labour Day serves as an important reminder that the true strength of any organisation lies in its people, and that leadership is not only about providing direction, but also about being present and walking alongside the team.
The celebration also underscored Sun Siyam Olhuveli’s continued commitment to nurturing a people-first culture where personal growth, shared purpose, and collaboration are actively encouraged. From long-serving team members to those beginning their professional journey, the day’s interactions reinforced the values that support a strong workplace culture and sustainable service excellence. The initiative highlighted that memorable hospitality experiences are built not only through systems and standards, but through genuine human connection, shared respect, and a collective commitment to delivering excellence.
Set in the Maldives and recognised for its vibrant island hospitality, Sun Siyam Olhuveli continues to distinguish itself as a resort that values both guest satisfaction and employee wellbeing. Its operational strength is shaped by the dedication of teams working across diverse functions, from culinary and guest services to engineering, housekeeping, recreation, and safety. By giving leaders the opportunity to experience these responsibilities directly, the resort demonstrated a strong commitment to understanding the full scope of the guest journey and the people who make that journey possible.
As part of the Lifestyle Collection under the House of Siyam, Sun Siyam Olhuveli continues to place its people at the heart of its story. The International Labour Day initiative reflected a broader philosophy that meaningful hospitality begins with empowered teams, supportive leadership, and a culture in which every individual feels recognised and valued. Through efforts such as this, the resort continues to foster an environment where employees are encouraged to grow, contribute, and take pride in their role, while guests benefit from the warmth, professionalism, and authentic care that define the Sun Siyam Olhuveli experience.
