President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that cooperation between the Maldives and Sri Lanka in the field of youth and sports development will be further strengthened under a newly signed agreement between the two governments. Speaking during his ongoing official visit to Sri Lanka, the President described the agreement on sports as one of several important understandings reached between the two neighbouring countries, reflecting the close and enduring partnership that continues to develop across multiple sectors.
President Dr Muizzu noted that Sri Lanka has long been a valued partner of the Maldives, particularly in supporting national efforts to advance opportunities for young people and strengthen the country’s sports sector. He stated that the cooperation extended through this agreement would further enhance ongoing efforts in youth and sports development, while also opening wider avenues for collaboration that can benefit both nations in the years ahead. The President further underscored that the Maldives has always attached great importance to the continued assistance and friendship extended by Sri Lanka.
The President highlighted the meaningful role Sri Lanka has played in supporting the development of youth and sports in the Maldives. Over the years, the Sri Lankan government has provided notable assistance to Maldivian athletes and sports institutions through the facilitation of training programmes, exposure opportunities, and training camps across a wide range of sporting disciplines. These have included football, cricket, tennis, athletics, and several other sports that continue to attract growing interest and participation among Maldivian youth.
He also noted that the support extended by Sri Lanka has not been limited to technical development alone, but has also included practical assistance for Maldivian teams travelling to Sri Lanka for international competitions. Arrangements have consistently been made to ensure that Maldivian athletes and officials receive the necessary services and support with ease, enabling them to participate more effectively and focus on performance and representation at international events. This continued cooperation has contributed positively to the growth of Maldivian sports and the strengthening of institutional ties between the two countries.
President Dr Muizzu expressed confidence that his visit to Sri Lanka would further reinforce this important partnership and create stronger momentum for future cooperation. He said the understandings reached during the visit would help the Maldives move forward with greater support in achieving its goals for youth empowerment and sports development. The President’s remarks reflect the broader vision of both countries to invest in youth, encourage sporting excellence, and foster closer regional collaboration through practical and mutually beneficial partnerships.
The agreement is widely seen as a positive step in enhancing the long-standing relationship between the Maldives and Sri Lanka, especially in areas that directly contribute to the growth, wellbeing, and aspirations of younger generations. As the Maldives continues to place greater focus on building opportunities for youth and improving national sports development, strengthened cooperation with Sri Lanka is expected to bring further benefits through knowledge-sharing, training access, institutional collaboration, and regional engagement.
