Honourable Speaker of the Parliament of Sri Lanka, (Dr) Jagath Wickramaratne, paid a courtesy call on His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Muizzu today as part of the President’s ongoing State Visit to Sri Lanka, underscoring the close and longstanding relationship between the Republic of Maldives and the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka.
During the meeting, President Dr Muizzu and Speaker Dr Wickramaratne reflected on the enduring friendship that has continued to shape relations between the two neighbouring countries over many decades. Their discussions highlighted not only the strength of official government-to-government engagement, but also the deep-rooted people-to-people ties that have contributed significantly to mutual understanding, regional goodwill, and sustained cooperation between the Maldives and Sri Lanka.
A key focus of the discussions was the importance of strengthening inter-parliamentary engagement as a means of further advancing bilateral relations. In this regard, both sides noted the valuable role of the Maldives-Sri Lanka Parliamentary Friendship Group and the Sri Lanka-Maldives Parliamentary Friendship Association in promoting closer collaboration between the legislative bodies of the two countries. The meeting also emphasised the importance of building stronger institutional partnerships through continued dialogue, capacity-building initiatives, and the sharing of parliamentary knowledge and experience.
Both sides expressed a shared interest in expanding practical cooperation between lawmakers and parliamentary institutions, with particular attention given to opportunities that support professional development, legislative exchange, and closer engagement on areas of mutual interest. The discussions reflected a common understanding that stronger parliamentary cooperation can make a meaningful contribution to the broader bilateral partnership and support the continued development of democratic institutions in both countries.
The meeting concluded with an agreement to explore new avenues of cooperation and to facilitate future exchanges between members of parliament, reaffirming the mutual commitment of the Maldives and Sri Lanka to further deepen their warm and friendly relations. The engagement also carried added significance in the context of the two countries having celebrated 60 years of formal diplomatic relations in July 2025, marking an important milestone in a partnership defined by friendship, respect, and constructive collaboration.
