His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Muizzu today participated in a commemorative tree planting ceremony in Colombo, held to mark the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Maldives and the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, highlighting the enduring friendship and close cooperation that have long defined ties between the two neighbouring countries.
The ceremony took place at Vihara Mahadevi Park in Colombo, where President Dr Muizzu was warmly received by His Excellency Anura Kumara Disanayaka, President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka. As part of the occasion, the two Heads of State planted Horsfieldia iryaghedhi trees, a critically endangered species endemic to Sri Lanka, in a gesture that carried both diplomatic and environmental significance.
The tree planting ceremony served as a meaningful reflection of the strong bilateral relationship that continues to flourish between the Maldives and Sri Lanka. It symbolised not only the continued growth of friendship between the two nations, but also their shared commitment to environmental stewardship, sustainability, and the protection of natural heritage for the benefit of future generations. The selection of an endangered tree species added further depth to the occasion, underscoring the importance both countries place on conservation and responsible global citizenship.
The event formed part of the official programme of President Dr Muizzu’s ongoing State Visit to Sri Lanka, which includes a series of high-level engagements focused on further strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing cooperation in areas of mutual interest and shared benefit. The visit reflects the importance both governments attach to maintaining close dialogue and building on existing partnerships in a manner that supports long-term regional stability, prosperity, and collaboration.
Since the establishment of diplomatic relations on 26 July 1965, the Maldives and Sri Lanka have enjoyed strong and friendly ties founded on mutual respect, trust, and longstanding people-to-people connections. Over the decades, relations between the two countries have continued to develop across a wide range of areas, supported by close geographic proximity and a shared interest in promoting peace, progress, and sustainable development in the region.
Today’s ceremony offered a dignified and forward-looking tribute to six decades of diplomatic engagement between the Maldives and Sri Lanka. It also reaffirmed the common values that continue to guide both nations as they work together to deepen friendship, expand cooperation, and contribute positively to the well-being of their peoples and the wider region.
