The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism of Sri Lanka, Honourable Vijitha Herath, MP, paid a courtesy call on His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Muizzu today, during the President’s ongoing State Visit to Sri Lanka, underscoring the enduring strength of relations between the Maldives and Sri Lanka and the shared commitment of both countries to further deepen their longstanding partnership.
During the meeting, President Dr Muizzu and Minister Herath reflected on the six decades of formal diplomatic relations that have connected the Maldives and Sri Lanka through mutual respect, shared values, and a long history of friendship between the peoples of the two neighbouring nations. The discussions highlighted the importance of preserving and advancing this close relationship through continued dialogue, constructive engagement, and practical cooperation in areas that support national development and regional prosperity.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining regular engagement and pursuing new avenues of collaboration for the mutual benefit of the Maldives and Sri Lanka. Their exchange focused on strengthening bilateral relations across key sectors of common interest, with particular attention given to environmental conservation, tourism, and trade. These sectors remain important pillars for both countries as they continue to advance sustainable development goals, build economic resilience, and create wider opportunities for their people.
The discussion on tourism carried particular significance, as both the Maldives and Sri Lanka are internationally recognised destinations within the Indian Ocean region, each offering unique strengths to global travellers. In this context, enhanced cooperation in tourism has the potential to support greater exchange of expertise, stronger destination promotion, and expanded opportunities for regional travel and investment. With the Maldives renowned globally for its world-class resort industry, exceptional hospitality standards, and premium visitor experiences, deeper engagement with regional partners such as Sri Lanka is expected to contribute positively to broader tourism development and connectivity within the region.
The Maldives’ tourism sector continues to stand as one of the country’s most distinguished success stories, with its collection of luxury resorts, environmentally conscious hospitality concepts, and high-end leisure offerings attracting visitors from across the world. As international tourism continues to evolve, discussions that encourage partnership in this area reflect a forward-looking vision centred on sustainability, innovation, and shared growth. Cooperation with Sri Lanka in tourism and related fields could also strengthen knowledge-sharing in destination management, environmental stewardship, and trade linkages that support service industries connected to travel and hospitality.
The courtesy call also reflected the warm diplomatic atmosphere surrounding President Dr Muizzu’s State Visit, which is taking place at the invitation of His Excellency Anura Kumara Disanayaka, President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka. The visit, being undertaken by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed from 3 to 6 May 2026, demonstrates the value both countries place on high-level engagement and on reinforcing a relationship that has matured steadily over decades.
As the Maldives and Sri Lanka continue to build on their historic ties, the meeting between President Dr Muizzu and Minister Herath served as a meaningful reaffirmation of the shared aspiration to expand cooperation, strengthen people-to-people links, and promote a future of greater partnership, stability, and prosperity for both nations.
