Maldivian is preparing to introduce direct flights between the Maldives and Melbourne, becoming the first national airline service to operate a route between the Maldives and Australia. The new service is expected to strengthen the Maldives’ long-haul connectivity, while creating a direct and convenient travel option for visitors from one of the country’s growing tourism markets. The development is also seen as an important step in expanding the Maldives’ international aviation reach and supporting broader efforts to improve accessibility to the destination for global travellers.
According to Island Aviation Services Limited, the inaugural flight is scheduled to depart from the Maldives on 17 May, with the return flight set for 19 May. The route is expected to operate on a weekly basis initially, with the airline considering future adjustments to frequency depending on passenger demand. The introduction of the service is anticipated to offer greater flexibility for travellers, improve journey convenience, and open further opportunities for tourism, business travel, and people-to-people exchange between the two countries.
The launch follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on 19 March aimed at establishing direct air connectivity between the Maldives and Australia. The agreement was signed by Maldives Civil Aviation Authority Chairman Abdul Haris and Australia’s Assistant Secretary for International Aviation, Jim Wolf. The new route reflects ongoing efforts by the relevant authorities to strengthen bilateral air service arrangements and further diversify the Maldives’ international aviation network in line with the country’s long-term connectivity objectives.
The direct connection is expected to provide added momentum to the Maldives’ tourism sector, particularly as Australia continues to emerge as a promising source market. Known globally for its luxury resorts, distinctive island experiences, and high-end hospitality offerings, the Maldives remains a highly attractive destination for travellers seeking premium leisure experiences, privacy, and natural beauty. Improved direct access from Melbourne is likely to enhance the appeal of Maldivian resorts for Australian holidaymakers by reducing travel complexity and creating a more seamless journey to the destination.
Tourism figures already indicate encouraging progress in this market. A total of 6,526 Australian visitors travelled to the Maldives during the first two months of the year, representing a 1.4 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2025. With direct flights expected to improve awareness, convenience, and travel confidence among Australian travellers, the new route is poised to contribute positively to visitor growth and further support the Maldives’ standing as one of the world’s leading island destinations.
