Dhiraagu has received three international awards recognising the performance of its 5G network, with the honours presented during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, one of the world’s largest gatherings of telecommunications industry leaders, technology innovators, and digital infrastructure providers. The awards were presented as part of the Ookla Speedtest Awards programme for the first half of 2025, highlighting the company’s network performance in the Maldives based on independently analysed user data.

The company was recognised with three awards: Maldives’ Fastest 5G Network, Maldives’ Best 5G Network, and Maldives’ Best 5G Gaming Experience. These distinctions were determined using data derived from Ookla Speedtest Intelligence, which evaluates network performance based on millions of real-world tests conducted by users. The awards were formally presented during the global event in Spain, where telecommunications operators, infrastructure providers, and technology developers convene annually to showcase advancements shaping the future of digital connectivity.

The recognition reflects the evolving dynamics of the telecommunications market in the Maldives, where network speed, reliability, and latency increasingly influence consumer choice and digital service adoption. As digital platforms expand and demand for real-time connectivity continues to grow, network performance has become a central benchmark for both individual users and enterprises. Gaming performance has also emerged as an important indicator of network capability, particularly as interactive entertainment, live streaming, and cloud-based services require consistently low latency and stable connectivity.

Dhiraagu stated that more than 73 percent of the Maldivian population currently has access to its 5G network. The continued expansion of this infrastructure forms a key component of the company’s broader digital strategy, which focuses on strengthening connectivity across islands and supporting the growing digital needs of households, businesses, and public institutions. By extending 5G coverage across a geographically dispersed island nation, the company aims to facilitate advanced digital services and support economic sectors that increasingly rely on high-speed communication networks.

The operator has also received recognition in previous years for its network performance. Dhiraagu was previously awarded Maldives’ Fastest Mobile Network for three consecutive years and Fastest 5G Network for two consecutive years. These recognitions have reinforced the company’s position in network speed rankings and highlighted ongoing investments in upgrading telecommunications infrastructure in the country.

Dhiraagu was the first operator to commercially launch 5G services in both South Asia and the Maldives, positioning the company at the forefront of next-generation connectivity in the region. The deployment of 5G technology has been accompanied by efforts to broaden coverage while enabling digital services that support modern business operations, tourism services, financial platforms, and public sector transformation. Enhanced connectivity is increasingly viewed as essential infrastructure for enabling innovation, supporting entrepreneurship, and improving the efficiency of services across sectors.

International benchmarking by organisations such as Ookla has become an important reference point in the telecommunications industry, providing performance metrics based on large volumes of user-generated Speedtest data. These measurements allow network providers to compare performance across markets and demonstrate improvements in speed, reliability, and user experience. As a result, global rankings are increasingly referenced by telecommunications operators when presenting network quality and technological capability to consumers and industry stakeholders.

Dhiraagu, formally known as Dhivehi Raajjeyge Gulhun PLC, remains the largest telecommunications and digital services provider in the Maldives. The latest international recognition places the Maldivian operator within wider global discussions on 5G performance at a time when regional markets are accelerating investment in advanced telecommunications infrastructure. As demand for digital services continues to expand across industries ranging from finance and education to tourism and entertainment, the development of reliable high-speed connectivity is expected to play an increasingly important role in supporting the Maldives’ broader digital development trajectory and strengthening its position within the global digital economy.
