The Government of the Maldives has announced the addition of five new destinations to the country’s international flight network as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen air connectivity and maintain steady tourism flows amid aviation disruptions linked to the escalating conflict in the Middle East. The announcement was made by the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, Mohamed Ameen, during a press conference held at the President’s Office.
Speaking at the briefing, Minister Ameen explained that the Maldives’ heavy reliance on tourism as the primary driver of national economic activity means that disruptions to international flight services can have significant consequences for the island nation. As such, the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation, together with relevant authorities and industry partners, has been working actively to mitigate potential impacts arising from the evolving situation in the Middle East and to ensure that the Maldives remains accessible to travelers from key global markets.
The Minister noted that encouraging developments are beginning to emerge as several international carriers gradually resume operations on selected routes. Commercial aviation activity is slowly returning, with airlines cautiously reintroducing services through designated travel corridors. Among these developments, Emirates has restarted limited operations, and a flight from the airline successfully arrived in the Maldives recently, marking the resumption of connectivity through important regional transit hubs.
Minister Ameen explained that Dubai International Airport and Sharjah International Airport have begun operating flights during specific time windows through controlled corridors, enabling airlines to maintain essential travel services. He further stated that Emirates flights are once again operating to the Maldives depending on available capacity, with additional arrivals expected as operational conditions improve. According to the Minister, these developments represent gradual but meaningful improvements in the restoration of international aviation services.
“Throughout this situation, some commercial airlines have resumed operations. Just last night, an Emirates flight landed in the Maldives. A corridor is being operated for small-scale rescues. An Emirates flight will also land here today. Dubai International Airport and Sharjah Airport are carrying out limited operations in specific corridors. They are also coming to Maldives depending on the available capacity. These are the slow improvements observed,” Minister Ameen explained during the press conference.
In parallel with the gradual reopening of regional aviation routes, the government has introduced additional measures aimed at safeguarding the tourism sector, which remains the backbone of the Maldivian economy. A dedicated team has been tasked with overseeing efforts to sustain and increase tourist arrivals during this period of uncertainty. Minister Ameen emphasized that even temporary measures to maintain connectivity are crucial to minimizing potential economic disruptions and ensuring continued visitor inflows to the country’s resorts and tourism establishments.
As part of these initiatives, the Minister announced that direct air routes have been introduced to five new destinations in Europe. The expansion of the European network is expected to provide travelers with greater accessibility to the Maldives and diversify arrival markets at a time when traditional transit routes are facing operational challenges. In addition to the new European routes, the government is also working with airlines to increase flight frequencies from Asia, Southeast Asia, and India. The Minister further stated that airlines such as Aeroflot and Turkish Airlines are also expected to increase their operational capacity, contributing to improved passenger connectivity from key international markets.
Minister Ameen also highlighted ongoing coordination with European carriers to facilitate relief operations and maintain reliable travel corridors where possible. These efforts are aimed at ensuring that tourists and travelers continue to have safe and efficient access to the Maldives despite the operational challenges affecting certain international aviation hubs.
The Minister noted that while Doha International Airport and Bahrain International Airport—two important transit hubs for flights to the Maldives are currently closed due to the situation in the region, Muscat International Airport remains operational for specific routes. This has provided an alternative transit point for certain international flights and contributed to maintaining essential aviation connectivity for the island nation.
