Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has announced the opening of an invitation for Expressions of Interest (EOI) for the design and development of a yacht marina in Uligamu, located in Haa Alif Atoll. The initiative reflects ongoing efforts to enhance maritime infrastructure and strengthen tourism-related services in the northern region of the Maldives. The project is expected to support the growing number of visiting yachts and provide improved facilities for international travelers arriving by sea.
The agreement for the development of the marina was formally signed between MPL and the Uligamu Council on 1 August 2024. Through this collaboration, the project seeks to introduce structured marina facilities that can accommodate leisure vessels while supporting local economic activity and tourism services. Uligamu has long served as a popular entry point for international yachts navigating the Indian Ocean, particularly during peak tourism seasons when numerous vessels arrive in Maldivian waters.
Despite the increasing number of visiting yachts, adequate infrastructure and tourism services have not yet been fully established on the island. The proposed marina development is intended to address these limitations by creating dedicated docking facilities and supporting infrastructure designed to improve safety, accessibility, and visitor experience. With improved marina services, the project is expected to contribute to tourism diversification and increase opportunities for local businesses and service providers.
According to MPL, the marina will be developed in a designated area with a floating platform constructed on the ocean. The floating structure will measure approximately three feet in width and will be designed to accommodate marine vessels ranging from 12 to 15 metres in length. The facility is intended to serve as a practical and sustainable docking solution for yachts arriving in the northern Maldives, offering a structured environment for vessel anchoring and related services.
Interested parties are invited to submit Expressions of Interest to [email protected] or contact MPL for further information regarding the project. The deadline for submissions has been set for 1300 hours on 9 March. MPL has encouraged qualified developers and investors with expertise in marina design and marine infrastructure to participate in the process.
During a recent visit to Uligamu in Haa Alif Atoll, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu assured residents that the development of the yacht marina would commence in the near future. He stated that the government intends for the marina to operate as a long-term facility that supports continuous maritime activity and tourism in the region. The project is expected to strengthen the Maldives’ position as a premier destination for international yachting while bringing new economic opportunities to communities in the northern atolls.
