National airline Maldivian has entered into an interline agreement with Air India, a strategic step designed to strengthen transportation ties and improve passenger services across regional and domestic routes. Under the accord, travellers arriving on Air India flights will be able to connect directly to sixteen destinations within Maldivian’s domestic network, creating a more seamless journey from major Indian gateways such as New Delhi and Mumbai to the Maldives’ scattered islands. This cooperation is expected to help Maldivian capture a larger share of passengers originating from India, one of the country’s most important tourism source markets.

Maldivian Managing Director Ibrahim Iyas described the partnership as a significant advancement in the carrier’s ongoing efforts to decentralise travel beyond Malé. He highlighted that by enabling smoother connections to atolls across the country, the agreement will reinforce the role of regional airports as key access points for both local communities and international visitors. Iyas further noted that the collaboration will generate broad benefits for the tourism and trade sectors in both countries, by making it easier for travellers and businesses to move people and goods across the region.

Air India’s Chief Commercial Officer Nipun Aggarwal underscored the Maldives’ status as a premier destination for Indian travellers, emphasising that the new arrangement meaningfully expands access across the island nation. With coordinated itineraries and through-checking options, guests flying from Indian metropolitan centres will be able to transition more efficiently from their international flights to domestic legs operated by Maldivian. This will be especially valuable for visitors heading to high-end island resorts and guesthouses that rely on nearby domestic airports for timely arrivals and departures.

For the Maldives’ resort sector, the enhanced connectivity is expected to support more reliable transfer schedules, reduce transit times and improve the overall guest experience. Resorts located near domestic airports stand to gain from better-aligned flight times, allowing properties to offer clearer arrival and departure options to tour operators and direct guests. This, in turn, can strengthen booking confidence, support longer stays and encourage repeat visits from the Indian market, which increasingly looks for convenient, well-coordinated travel solutions.

Officials from Maldivian concluded that the cooperation will optimise network connectivity and elevate the customer experience by streamlining travel logistics and offering more reliable options for passengers exploring the country’s diverse destinations. By integrating Air India’s regional reach with Maldivian’s extensive domestic footprint, the partnership is positioned to reinforce the Maldives’ reputation as a well-connected luxury and leisure destination, while at the same time supporting economic activity and mobility across its inhabited islands.
