Fuvahmulah City is set to experience a boost in its tourism and infrastructure development as the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) enters into a strategic agreement with the Ministry of Tourism to develop a city hotel and introduce an eco-tourism project on the island. This milestone agreement was formalized during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s official visit to Fuvahmulah, as part of a broader initiative to enhance public services and economic growth in the southern region of the Maldives.

The signing ceremony took place at Fuvahmulah School, where MACL’s Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed signed on behalf of the company, and State Minister for Tourism Nashath Rasheed represented the Ministry. The upcoming hotel and eco-tourism project aim to offer travelers unique and immersive experiences in one of the most ecologically diverse and culturally rich islands in the country. Fuvahmulah is internationally recognized for its one-island-atoll formation, freshwater lakes, black pebble beaches, and endemic wildlife, making it an ideal destination for nature-based tourism and sustainable travel.

This agreement is part of a broader development initiative spearheaded by President Muizzu, who launched multiple infrastructure and social development projects during his visit. The agenda included the official commencement of practical work on 400 housing units across Fuvahmulah, addressing the growing residential needs of the population.

In addition to the tourism-related ventures, several other key agreements were signed. Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) was awarded a contract to build 16 new classrooms and a modern laboratory for Fuvahmulah School, significantly enhancing educational capacity on the island. A youth development center will be constructed by Center Land Pvt. Ltd., further supporting the administration’s youth empowerment goals. Furthermore, MACL will also be leading the development of a state-of-the-art sports complex, designed to cater to a variety of athletic and recreational needs for the local population.

President Muizzu also engaged directly with the community during his visit. He met with officials from the Fuvahmulah City Council and members of the Women’s Development Committee, emphasizing his government’s commitment to participatory development that involves local stakeholders. The President’s engagement reflects a government-wide strategy to ensure that development initiatives align with the specific needs and aspirations of island communities.

Following his engagements in Fuvahmulah, President Muizzu is scheduled to continue his southern outreach tour with a visit to Addu City. His itinerary includes stops in Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo, where further community meetings and site visits are expected to take place.

These investments reflect a continued effort to decentralize economic opportunities and promote tourism diversification beyond the traditional resort model. With its unique geography and untapped tourism potential, Fuvahmulah stands to benefit significantly from this wave of investment, positioning itself as a promising destination for eco-conscious travelers and adventure seekers in the near future.
