Building on the resounding success of its debut, the Burunu Boma Global Sport Fishing Tournament is returning for its second edition from 13–15 June 2026. The announcement was made by Visit Maldives Club in collaboration with Visit Maldives Corporation (VMC), reaffirming the country’s growing role in the international marine sports tourism arena. Recognized as the nation’s largest and most prestigious sport fishing competition, the event is attracting attention from sport fishing enthusiasts across the globe.
The inaugural edition of Burunu Boma, held in 2025, featured a dynamic lineup of nine competitive teams, eight from the Maldives and one international entry. Team Dubai emerged as the champions, demonstrating outstanding skill and sportsmanship. Their performance earned them the top prize of USD 25,000, a benchmark achievement for a tournament making its debut on the global sport fishing calendar. This strong start has paved the way for the tournament’s expansion, with the 2026 event expected to draw a broader range of both local and international participants.
With its crystal-clear waters teeming with diverse marine life, the Maldives has long been a dream destination for recreational and professional anglers alike. The Burunu Boma Tournament has leveraged this natural advantage, embracing the globally respected ‘Catch and Release’ practice to ensure environmental sustainability remains at the heart of the competition. The tournament serves not only as a thrilling sporting challenge but also as a platform to promote sustainable marine tourism and preserve the country’s fragile marine ecosystems.
Visit Maldives Corporation’s Managing Director and CEO, Ibrahim Shiuree, emphasized the tournament’s role in enhancing the Maldives’ tourism offerings. “The inaugural Burunu Boma was a powerful example of how we can diversify tourism experiences by incorporating world-class sporting events,” he said. “For 2026, we’re focusing on expanding team participation, deepening collaborations, and embedding the tournament firmly into the international sport fishing calendar.”
Echoing this sentiment, Visit Maldives Club President Ahmed Saaif praised the enthusiasm and unity of all stakeholders involved in the previous edition. “This year’s event highlighted the incredible camaraderie among participants, organizers, and partners. As we look ahead, we are excited to welcome even more teams and deliver a vibrant and memorable experience for all attendees,” he remarked.
The tournament’s closing ceremony will take place on 17 June 2026. Further information, including registration guidelines and event venues, will be released through the official Visit Maldives platforms and the dedicated Burunu Boma microsite.
As part of Visit Maldives’ ongoing strategy to market the country as a destination rich in unique and immersive experiences, the Burunu Boma Global Sport Fishing Tournament contributes to positioning the Maldives beyond its well-established image of luxury and leisure. By investing in marine sports tourism and highlighting sustainability, the Maldives continues to broaden its appeal to new travel segments while protecting its marine heritage for generations to come.
With anticipation building and preparations underway, the 2026 edition of Burunu Boma promises to be a thrilling event that not only celebrates competitive spirit but also reinforces the Maldives’ identity as a top-tier destination for responsible marine adventure.
