Rising global interest in peaceful travel experiences has placed the Maldives among the world’s most serene destinations for a “calmcation” in 2025, according to recent findings by UK-based long-haul travel specialist, Travelbag. As British travellers increasingly seek to disconnect from hectic schedules and reconnect with themselves, searches for the term “calmcation” vacations centered on quiet, nature, and mindfulness, have doubled in the past three months alone. A staggering 72% of UK holidaymakers reportedly travel to relax and recharge, with nearly half (47%) desiring experiences that foster mindfulness and emotional grounding.
In response to this growing trend, Travelbag conducted an in-depth analysis of 36 global destinations, evaluating key serenity indicators such as noise and light pollution, cleanliness, quality of green spaces, and the level of travel congestion. Among the top-ranked tranquil destinations were Queenstown (New Zealand), the Seychelles, and Cairns (Australia). Queenstown, nestled between Lake Wakatipu and the Southern Alps, ranked first with a cleanliness score of 91.7 and an exceptional green space quality score of 94.4. The Seychelles earned second place for its untouched beauty and remarkably low noise and light pollution rating of 16.7, while Cairns secured third for its well-preserved tropical surroundings and a cleanliness score of 69.6.
The Maldives, a longstanding icon of relaxation and luxury, also earned a prominent place on the list, reaffirming its status as a global haven for serenity seekers. With its unrivaled turquoise waters, powder-white beaches, and collection of secluded island resorts, the Maldives continues to attract wellness-focused travellers looking for true peace and solitude. According to Travelbag’s study, the Maldives recorded an average beach rating of 4.63, placing it among the highest-rated beachside destinations globally.
Highlighting the Maldives’ appeal, beaches such as Bikini Beach, Baros Beach, and Reethi Beach were singled out for their pristine environments and calming ambiance. These shores are not only postcard-perfect but are also carefully maintained to offer visitors immersive, stress-free experiences amid natural surroundings.
Danny Hugill, Destination Executive for the Maldives at Travelbag, emphasized the country’s enduring popularity. “The Maldives is one of our most cherished destinations – an idyllic collection of tiny islands that offer unmatched opportunities to unwind,” he stated. “Long celebrated as a top honeymoon destination, it remains the ultimate place to escape, slow down, and enjoy the tranquillity of nature.”
The Maldives’ luxury hospitality sector, known for its overwater villas, spa sanctuaries, and barefoot luxury ethos, is deeply aligned with the values of calmcation tourism. Resorts such as Baros Maldives, Soneva Fushi, Vakkaru Maldives, and COMO Maalifushi not only offer world-class amenities but are also designed to immerse guests in silence, nature, and wellness. Many resorts are situated on private islands, allowing for undisturbed relaxation, bespoke spa treatments, sunrise yoga sessions, and personalized wellness programs that cater to guests’ physical and emotional wellbeing.
With a market increasingly drawn toward slow travel and mindfulness, the Maldives remains a natural choice for those seeking a rebalancing getaway in 2025. The nation’s commitment to preserving its natural beauty, along with its portfolio of luxury retreats designed to harmonize with the environment, ensures it remains one of the most desirable destinations for travellers craving a peaceful escape from the demands of modern life.
