As both countries mark the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations, the Maldives welcomed His Excellency Anura Kumara Dissanayake, President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, on Monday for his first official visit since assuming office in September 2024. The state visit, extended at the invitation of Maldivian President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, reflects the mutual commitment of both nations to deepen bilateral engagement and regional cooperation.

Upon arrival at Velana International Airport, President Dissanayake was warmly received by President Muizzu and senior Maldivian officials. Shortly after landing, the Sri Lankan leader shared a message via social media expressing his enthusiasm to engage in constructive discussions with Maldivian leadership. “Just landed in the Maldives! Ready to engage in meaningful discussions with President @MMuizzu and other leaders to strengthen our collaboration,” he posted. He further announced the intention to sign several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) to boost cooperation between the two nations.

This visit comes at a time of renewed interest in enhancing bilateral ties, particularly in areas that benefit both economies and support regional stability. According to officials, the talks are expected to result in the signing of MoUs focusing on shared interests including tourism, fisheries, trade, education, health, maritime safety, and people-to-people exchanges. These agreements are designed to pave the way for practical cooperation, economic partnerships, and the promotion of sustainable development initiatives in both countries.

The Maldives and Sri Lanka officially established diplomatic relations on 26 July 1965. Since then, the partnership has evolved into a multifaceted relationship characterized by cultural affinity, mutual respect, and active collaboration on regional platforms such as the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC).

President Dissanayake’s three-day visit will also include official talks with President Muizzu, a joint press conference, and meetings with key government officials. The visit underscores Sri Lanka’s diplomatic priorities in fostering closer relations with Indian Ocean neighbours and highlights the Maldives’ strategic vision in strengthening regional partnerships that complement its own developmental goals.
