On the sidelines of his official state visit to Singapore, His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and First Lady Madam Sajidha Mohamed met with members of the Maldivian community residing in Singapore. The event, held at the Ritz-Carlton Garden Pavilion, was an opportunity for the President to directly engage with Maldivians living abroad, listen to their concerns, and reaffirm the government’s commitment to strengthening connections with the diaspora.

This engagement reflects the President’s ongoing efforts to meet with overseas Maldivians during his international visits, an initiative aimed at fostering national unity, understanding the experiences of expatriate communities, and acknowledging their contribution to the country’s international presence. It was the first such gathering during President Muizzu’s tenure in Singapore, which also marks his inaugural state visit to the country since assuming office.
President Dr Muizzu took time to speak with individuals and families, inquiring about their well-being, education, employment, and quality of life in Singapore. The President’s direct interaction with attendees was warmly welcomed, offering a platform for open discussion and personal connection.
Addressing the gathering, Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Abdulla Khaleel emphasized the value President Muizzu places on engaging with Maldivians abroad. He encouraged those living in Singapore to continue upholding Maldivian values and contribute positively to the country’s image on the global stage. “The world is evolving and so is the mindset of Maldivian society,” said the Minister. “More Maldivians are choosing to live abroad, to seek education, raise their families, pursue professional growth, and find peace in new environments. While this journey can present challenges, it is crucial for every individual to preserve their identity, carry themselves with integrity, and honour the name of the Maldives.”

Dr Khaleel also noted that the President’s visit to Singapore had yielded successful outcomes, including the signing of key agreements and partnerships that will benefit the Maldives in areas such as education, environment, and economic development.
The evening concluded with a dinner hosted by the President and First Lady in honour of the Maldivian community, offering an informal space for continued interaction. The gathering fostered a sense of belonging and appreciation, reflecting the administration’s commitment to inclusive governance that reaches Maldivians across borders.

The state visit, held at the invitation of Singapore’s President Tharman Shanmugaratnam from 29 June to 2 July 2025, commemorates the 50th anniversary of formal diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Singapore. As part of the broader agenda of high-level meetings, investment forums, and bilateral cooperation agreements, the engagement with the diaspora served as a personal and meaningful highlight, strengthening the bridge between the Maldives and its citizens abroad.
