President Dr Mohamed Muizzu met with Prime Minister and Minister for Finance of the Republic of Singapore, His Excellency Lawrence Wong, on the afternoon of 30th June 2025, as part of his ongoing state visit to Singapore. The meeting brought renewed focus to the enduring partnership between the two countries and opened discussions on strategic areas of mutual interest, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Singapore, formally initiated on 20 February 1975.
During the meeting, both leaders acknowledged the strong foundation of Maldives–Singapore relations and reaffirmed their shared commitment to building on decades of collaboration. President Muizzu highlighted the warm hospitality extended by the Government of Singapore, expressing appreciation for the opportunity to engage at the highest levels to strengthen bilateral ties. Prime Minister Wong, in turn, noted the importance of the President’s visit in deepening trust and expanding cooperation, especially as both nations look toward sustainable and diversified development paths.
The two sides reviewed the contribution of Singaporean businesses to the growth of the Maldives’ tourism industry—one of the key drivers of the island nation’s economy. Discussions also focused on economic diversification strategies, particularly the development of the fisheries sector through expanded exports to new international markets. President Muizzu underscored his administration’s interest in exploring sustainable investments that could support new economic sectors while enhancing traditional industries.
Another major theme was the Maldives’ energy transition. President Muizzu reiterated the government’s target of generating 33% of the nation’s electricity from renewable sources by 2028. Both leaders discussed potential investments and partnerships to support this goal, particularly through access to Singapore’s expertise in green technology and clean energy infrastructure.
Education and human capital development featured prominently in the discussions. The two leaders explored opportunities to enhance collaboration in both foundational education and technical and vocational training. The exchange of knowledge and capacity-building was identified as a vital tool for long-term national development. Prime Minister Wong expressed Singapore’s continued support through study visits, scholarships, and training programmes designed to uplift institutional capacity in the Maldives.
The meeting also addressed urban planning collaboration, where technical expertise from Singapore could assist in the Maldives’ infrastructure development initiatives. Climate change was another major area of focus. As small island nations vulnerable to rising sea levels and environmental pressures, both countries agreed on the urgency of deepening cooperation on multilateral platforms and reaffirmed their shared commitment to global climate advocacy and environmental sustainability.
At the conclusion of the meeting, both leaders welcomed the signing of key Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) between the Maldives and Singapore. These agreements encompass technical cooperation in environmental management, capacity building through study visits and vocational training, and the strengthening of educational pathways. President Muizzu described the agreements as practical outcomes that align with the Maldives’ national priorities and praised Singapore’s willingness to extend institutional support.
“I am confident the MoUs signed today will further deepen our partnership and deliver tangible benefits to both our people,” President Muizzu stated. “Encouraging to see our cooperation strengthen further with the signing of key MoUs in technical capacity-building and environmental sustainability.”
This high-level meeting followed earlier engagements during the state visit, including President Muizzu’s official courtesy call on President Tharman Shanmugaratnam. Taken together, these discussions reflect the renewed commitment of both nations to nurture a productive, forward-looking relationship centred on economic growth, sustainable development, and people-oriented cooperation.
