The Maldives is moving forward with strategic plans to enhance flight connectivity to Gan International Airport in Addu City, aiming to strengthen regional tourism access and diversify inbound travel routes. The update was shared by Minister of Tourism and Environment, Thoriq Ibrahim, during a media briefing at the Arabian Travel Market (ATM) 2025 held at the Dubai World Trade Centre.

Currently, SriLankan Airlines is the only international carrier operating to Gan, the southernmost international airport in the Maldives. However, the government is actively engaging with multiple international and regional airlines to expand air services to this key gateway. Minister Thoriq confirmed that discussions have been held with four to five additional airlines, including talks surrounding the possible return of Wizz Air, whose operations were previously suspended.

In addition to full-service carriers, the government is also focusing on attracting low-cost airlines to make the Maldives more accessible to budget-conscious travellers, particularly during the summer season. Meetings have already taken place with representatives from airlines operating in the Maldives, such as Fly Dubai and Gulf Air, as well as with other carriers showing interest in expanding their network to the south of the country.

Recognizing the influence of Middle Eastern carriers in driving inbound tourism, Minister Thoriq highlighted the Maldives’ continued efforts to deepen partnerships with key Gulf airlines. He confirmed the signing of memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with both Emirates and Qatar Airways, aimed at increasing flight frequencies and enhancing international access to the Maldives through coordinated marketing and route development strategies.

“We are committed to improving air access not only to Malé but to all regions of the country,” Minister Thoriq stated. “Through our agreements with major airlines and collaborative promotions with MMPRC (Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation), we aim to strengthen the Maldives’ position as an easily accessible and appealing destination for a wide range of travellers.”

Alongside expanding routes, the government is addressing infrastructure concerns at Gan International Airport, which has faced criticism over limited facilities compared to other international gateways in the country. To resolve this, the airport’s redevelopment project has been awarded to Renaatus Projects, an India-based construction firm. According to the Minister, construction work is already underway to upgrade the airport’s infrastructure, improve passenger services, and enhance overall accessibility for international arrivals.

The development of Gan International Airport is part of a broader national strategy to decentralize tourism and bring economic benefits to the southern atolls. By enhancing connectivity and infrastructure, the government hopes to attract more visitors to Addu City and surrounding regions, offering travellers an opportunity to explore the Maldives beyond the traditional resort zones in the central atolls.
