In a prestigious recognition of his contributions to Islamic governance and development, His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Philosophy in Islamic Leadership and Madani Development by the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). The special convocation ceremony took place on Tuesday at the university’s main campus in Gombak, Kuala Lumpur, as part of the President’s ongoing official visit to Malaysia.

The Honorary Degree was formally conferred by Her Royal Highness Tengku Ampuan Pahang Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah, who serves as the Constitutional Head of IIUM. President Dr Muizzu was warmly welcomed upon arrival and signed the Visitors’ Book before proceeding to the ceremonial hall.

The convocation commenced with a grand academic procession and the national anthems of the Maldives and Malaysia, followed by a formal declaration of the ceremony by Her Royal Highness. The laureation address was delivered by Professor Emeritus Datuk Dr Osman Bakar, Rector of IIUM, who highlighted President Dr Muizzu’s leadership in promoting Islamic values, national development, and regional cooperation.

Following the conferment, President Dr Muizzu delivered a keynote lecture titled “The Intellectual Renaissance: Unveiling the Scientific and Modern Developments of Islamic Civilisation.” In his address, the President reflected on the intellectual heritage of the Islamic world and emphasized the importance of reviving a culture of knowledge, innovation, and ethical leadership. His speech called for a renewed focus on integrating traditional Islamic scholarship with modern scientific progress, offering a shared vision for sustainable development across Muslim societies.

The event was attended by a high-level Maldivian delegation, including Cabinet Ministers and senior government officials, as well as university leaders, scholars, and invited guests from across Malaysia. This marks the first time a Maldivian Head of State has received such recognition from IIUM and delivered a formal lecture at the institution.

Over the decades, IIUM has played a central role in educating Maldivian students, many of whom have gone on to serve in key positions in religious, academic, and public sectors in the Maldives. Since the 1990s, more than 380 Maldivians have graduated from IIUM, making it one of the most important international academic partners for the country.

President Dr Muizzu’s recognition by IIUM reflects not only his personal achievements but also the enduring academic and cultural ties between the Maldives and Malaysia. The ceremony stands as a symbol of mutual respect and shared commitment to nurturing Islamic leadership, educational excellence, and international cooperation.
