Maldives’ thriving in the cruise tourism sector, MSC Magnifica has successfully completed the longest sea journey processed by Maldives Immigration to date. The luxury cruise liner, operated by MSC Cruises, made its arrival at Malé Port on 2025 April 3, 2025, following a transoceanic journey that began in Fremantle-Perth, Australia on 2025 March 27. The voyage took the vessel across the vast Pacific Ocean and into the Indian Ocean, bringing with it 2,818 international visitors, comprising 1,866 passengers and 952 crew members.

The arrival of MSC Magnifica marks a milestone in the Maldives’ maritime tourism records, with the Seaport Division of Maldives Immigration providing en-route clearance for the entire journey. The successful processing of such a large number of visitors on a single cruise underscores the country’s growing capacity to handle long-distance international sea arrivals efficiently.

MSC Magnifica is the eighth cruise liner to visit the Maldives in 2025, further reflecting the nation’s appeal as a key port of call in the Indian Ocean. Cruise liners continue to play an important role in the Maldives’ tourism economy, contributing to the influx of international visitors each year. So far this year, the Maldives has already welcomed over 600,000 tourists, with government projections aiming for 2.3 million arrivals by the end of the year.

Recognizing the rising demand in the cruise tourism segment, the government is investing in the development of specialized cruise jetties in three strategic locations across the country. These new facilities are expected to further strengthen the Maldives’ position as a premier cruise destination, offering smoother and more convenient access for large vessels and their guests.

The successful voyage of MSC Magnifica not only reflects the Maldives’ readiness to accommodate complex maritime operations but also highlights the growing importance of sea-based tourism in supporting the country’s broader economic and tourism objectives.
