A new monthly high of 200,000 tourists visited the Maldives in February, as reported by the Tourism Ministry. This is more than the previous high of 177,000 arrivals, a 20% rise from February of the previous year. 192,000 tourists visited the Maldives in January of this year.
In February, 7,600 tourists visited the Maldives per day on average. A large increase in flights from China is the reason for the spike in arrivals. 52,000 Chinese visitors have arrived in the Maldives so far this year, making up 13% of all visitors. With 37,800 arrivals, Russia comes in second as the country with the most tourists. 37,300 and 34,000 tourists came from Italy and the United Kingdom, respectively.
390,000 tourists have visited the Maldives so far this year, a 15% rise from the same time last year. The Chinese market has proven to be very robust, and more Chinese airlines are anticipated to launch Maldivian flights soon. Beijing Capital Airlines, China Eastern, and Sichuan Airlines are among the current direct flight operators. Furthermore, this month saw the launch of charter flights by Xiamen Airlines.
Two million visitors are anticipated in total according to the Maldives’ budget for this year. The Ministry of Tourism has established an aim that is marginally more ambitious: drawing in 2.3 million visitors annually.
