South Huvadhu Atoll Fiyoaree Council has decided to lease over 429,000 square feet of land from Kaalhehutta, a neighboring island which falls under their jurisdiction, to develop a tourism zone.

In an announcement released today, Fiyoaree Council said that interested parties can submit their bids for the project and that the plot will be leased for a period of 50 years.

The lot measures a total of 429,480 square feet and the lowest bidding price is MVR 0.50 per square-foot. Council added that the plot will be leased wholly.

Interested parties are required to submit bid registration forms by 16th November, and bid submission and opening is scheduled for 30th November at the Secretariat of Fiyoaree Council.

Of the three nearby uninhabited islands, Kaalhehuttaa is the closest and falls under the jurisdiction of the Fiyoaree Council, said the Council’s President, Faizar Rasheed. He said that leasing plots for tourism and agriculture is part of the island’s land use plan.

According to Faizar, 5.6 hectares of the island’s 9.5 hectares were leased for organic farming earlier in 2023.

“We are leasing the remaining four hectares for tourism development,” he stated.

“We opened this opportunity since several parties have already expressed interested on the area, so we decided to open the bidding for the best proposal in adherence to the policy for it.”

The introduction of tourism to the island, according to the council president, will boost employment and the economy of Fiyoaree.
