Malé City’s clock tower has been inaugurated with a more modern layout.

As part of the Malé City Council’s strategic plan, the clock tower’s design and development got underway when Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, the current president, was the city’s mayor.

President Dr. Muizzu officially inaugurated the tower on Saturday night, November 18, during a special ceremony.

The new clock tower was built by Rasheed Carpentry and Construction (RCC) in partnership with Pioneer Maldives as one of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects.

The current clock tower is situated where it was originally intended, at the intersection of the Maafannu district’s Fareedhee Magu, Orchid Magu, Fandiyaaru Magu, and Funa Goalhi.

In 1990, the intersection’s first clock tower was erected to mark the 25th anniversary of the Maldives’ independence. The government of Sri Lanka constructed the clock tower as a symbol of the country’s close bilateral ties with the Maldives.

The new tower uses LED panels arranged throughout the structure to project stunning scenery, taking inspiration from the original clock tower.

In addition, the tower will ring five times a day with the call of Azan.
