On 18 October 2025, the Maldives etched its name into global history with a remarkable feat that showcased its enduring connection to the sea. A total of 623 individuals participated in a synchronized snorkeling event held in Baa Atoll, setting a new Guinness World Record for the most people snorkeling simultaneously. The event was part of the annual Baani Event, an initiative organized by the Baa Atoll Council in close collaboration with the Visit Maldives Corporation (VMC), bringing together a diverse group of participants in a shared celebration of marine culture and environmental consciousness.
The record attempt was held just a short distance from the capital island of Eydhafushi, at the picturesque sandbank of Villingilifaru Finolhu. The area, known for its western lagoon and richly biodiverse outer reef, served as the perfect natural setting for the event. Teeming with vibrant marine life and home to hundreds of Black-naped Terns, the reef provided a breathtaking underwater landscape that elevated the experience for participants and onlookers alike.
Participants entered the water at exactly 16:30 hours and remained snorkeling for one hour at multiple coordinated entry points. The effort saw representation from 13 inhabited islands and 15 luxury resorts in Baa Atoll. It wasn’t just locals who took part; the event welcomed resort staff, tourists, and community members from across the Maldives. The diverse participation created an atmosphere of unity and shared purpose, underscoring the country’s unique model where tourism, environment, and community go hand in hand.
Following the successful attempt, an official adjudicator from Guinness World Records presented a certification plaque to the Baa Atoll Council during a vibrant celebration ceremony. The event continued into the evening with music performances, cultural entertainment, and a dazzling fireworks show over the ocean a fitting tribute to an achievement rooted in national pride and ecological appreciation.
In recognition of the milestone, the feat has also been inscribed into the Visit Maldives Book of Records. A commemorative plaque and a special coin were presented by Visit Maldives Corporation CEO and Managing Director Ibrahim Shiury to the Baa Atoll Council as a gesture of appreciation and encouragement for their contribution.
“This achievement is a proud moment for our nation. It reflects our people’s bond with the ocean and our collective commitment to preserving it for generations to come,” noted Shiury during his address at the event. His words echoed the broader mission of the Visit Maldives Corporation, which aims to strengthen the Maldives’ global identity not only as a premier tourism destination but also as a leader in marine conservation and sustainable travel experiences.
